Happy Thanksgiving from all of InsideOut’s writers and staff!

Song of Myself

I am black
I am alive
I am a boy
I am good at reading
And writing
I have friends and family
I feel good

Letter from Home

I got a letter from my grandfather.
He always wrote, Grandmother never did.

Two generations from slavery,
her reading and writing skills were her embarrassment.

But her skills as a wife, mother (of my
mother), housekeeper, and grandmother were impeccable.

She made us laugh, and she made us go to church.
She made us dinner at a time when we called it lunch
and supper was our evening meal.

She could not help with homework,
but she gave us a keen sense
of love, and life, and friendship,
and family.
